Job Summary
Freedom Foods (2024) Inc. is seeking an experienced Human Resources Professional to join our Senior Management Team! In this key role, you will partner closely with the leaders across our 15 McDonald’s Restaurant locations, supporting approximately 1,000 employees from St. John’s to Gander.
As a trusted HR Leader, you will serve as the first point of contact for restaurant teams, delivering proactive and effective human resources solutions. You will be a strategic partner to the leadership team and an advocate for employees. This role involves frequent interaction with employees, management, and external partners and may require balancing strategic planning with day-to-day operational demands, including some evenings and weekends when required.
The Human Resources Manager oversees all aspects of the organization’s HR functions, ensuring alignment with business objectives, while fostering a positive, productive, and compliant workplace. This role requires a strong balance of strategic thinking, hands-on execution, and relationship building.
Essential Duties and Responsibilities
Employee Relations
- Serve as a trusted point of contact for employees, offering guidance and support on HR-related matters;
- Investigate, mediate, and resolve employee concerns and conflicts, ensuring a respectful and positive workplace environment;
- Coach and support managers in addressing sensitive employee relations issues;
- Lead and manage the progressive discipline process and disciplinary procedures;
- Administer Employee Benefits and Employee Assistance (EAP) Programs;
- Manage Leave of Absence documentation, including benefit continuation and return-to-work planning;
- Administer the Attendance Management Program;
- Ensure accurate documentation and proper procedures for investigations, agreements, and disciplinary actions; and
- Support initiatives that promote a positive workplace culture and enhance employee engagement and retention.
Training, Development, and Performance Management
- Own and manage the employee performance management process;
- Support employee development through ongoing education and training initiatives;
- Develop, implement, and maintain HR policies and procedures aligned with organizational goals;
- Ensure mandatory policy retraining and compliance training is completed annually; and
- Promote understanding and consistent application of HR policies across all levels of the organization.
Occupational Health and Safety (OHS)
- Ensure compliance with the Occupational Health and Safety Act and related requirements;
- Act as the primary organization contact for OHS related matters;
- Participate in workplace investigations and OHS compliance visits;
- Organize and support OHS committee meetings and required training;
- Ensure OHS committee meetings and activities are properly executed, documented, and reported;
- Support hazard identification and risk mitigation initiatives; and
- Exercise stop-work authority when required to address imminent safety risks.
Employee Injury and Return to Work Process
- Ensure compliance with all required Workplace NL regulations and requirements;
- Serve as the primary liaison for Workplace NL;
- Report employee injuries and incidents through the Workplace NL Connect portal;
- Develop and manage Early and Safety Return-to-Work Programs, including modified duties and accommodations;
- Advocate for employee accommodation and successful return-to-work outcomes;
- Manage the entire incident process, from injury to the employee’s return to full duties and hours;
- Ensure compliance with PRIME Employer Incentive Program requirements; and
- Provide guidance and support for managers throughout the incident management process.
Compliance
- Serve as the organizational subject matter expert on labour standards and human rights legislation;
- Ensure compliance with all employment related laws and regulations;
- Identify and mitigate any risks related to employee relations, discipline, employment conditions, and terminations;
- Maintain HR records and analyze workforce metrics to support informed decision-making;
- Support internal audits, compliance reviews, and governance initiatives; and
- Partner with externa advisors and legal counsel as required.
Qualifications
- University degree in Human Resources or related field, combined with HR progressive experience.
- Minimum of 5 years of experience in Human Resources management.
- Strong experience conducting workplace investigations and managing complaints.
- In-depth knowledge of Canadian employment legislation and HR best practices
- Proven ability to manage confidential and sensitive information with discretion.
- Strong analytical, communication, and interpersonal skills
- Demonstrated leadership and people-management experience.
- Ability to manage multiple priorities in a demanding environment.
- Strong conflict resolution and negotiation skills
- Valid drivers license, access to vehicle, and ability to travel between restaurant locations.
- Strong attention to details and critical thinking skills.
