This is a NAPE bargaining unit position
Salary: $25.54 per hour, 40 hours per week

THE ROLE: 

Under the direct supervision of the Town Manager, the successful candidate’s responsibilities shall be to assist with the public works and facility maintenance of the municipality including but not limited to; road networks, drainage systems, recreational grounds, parks, trails, playgrounds, and municipal facilities. The successful candidate shall be capable in grounds, building and infrastructure maintenance and repairs.

 

DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Clean and maintain sidewalks, streets, roads and public grounds of municipality and other areas
  • Load and unload trucks with supplies and equipment;
  • Shovel cement and other materials into cement mixers, spread concrete and asphalt on road surfaces using shovels, rakes and hand tampers, and perform other activities to assist in maintenance and repair of roads;
  • Assist in the development of a detailed plan to identify present and future maintenance requirements:
    • Inspect streets, roads, and other municipal facilities for possible deterioration and ensuring the necessary repairs are carried out;
    • Develop a detailed plan to identify present and future maintenance;
    • Preparing preventative maintenance schedules.
  • Maintain a detailed maintenance schedule for all municipal infrastructure and equipment;
  • Maintain daily work logs;
  • Maintain a detailed inventory of supplies and equipment including condition reports;
  • Set up required constriction zone signage, and direct traffic when necessary;
  • Respond to emergency call-outs as required; snow events to ensure the parking lots are cleared prior to opening. Dependent on weather, the individual would start their day at 5:00am in these situations – there is a call-in schedule for the winter months that is done week for week; other call-ins are unpredictable and could occur overnight, these would be dangerous and/or severe infrastructure failures such as road washouts, bridge failures, downed trees, etc. These are not common but could occur at any time dependent on hurricane weather, and other factors.
  • Snow clearing of municipal facilities (Recreational Centre and Town Office);
  • Assist in routine maintenance and repair of equipment;
  • Coordinating work priorities and schedules to ensure continuity of services;
  • Manage work of private contractors in consultation with the Town Manager, to include:
    • Plan work to be performed;
    • Assign and direct as the duties and work needed;
    • Arrange for necessary supplies, facilities, and equipment for contractors designated for specific work;
    • Monitor contractors in the performance of their duties and provide direction and support as required;
    • Inspection of completed work performed by the contractors;
    • Maintaining and reviewing timesheets for contractors.
  • Provide administrative support to the Town Manager by:
    • Investigating and responding to complaints and concerns at the direction of the Town Manager;
    • Preparing Public Works reports and recommendations for Council as required.
  • All other duties as assigned by the Town Manager or designate.

 

JOB REQUIREMENTS:

  • The ideal candidate will have successfully completed high school in addition to being a graduate of a post-secondary program in a related field (i.e., relevant trade, or specialization) or any equivalent combination of experience and training acceptable to the municipality;
  • Minimum of three (3) years of experience in municipal, construction, or maintenance related positions;
  • Must be able to produce a satisfactory Certificate of Conduct;
  • A valid Class 5 driver’s license with a clean drivers abstract;
  • A valid Traffic Control Certification
  • A valid Power Line Hazards Certification
  • Must demonstrate strong time management, planning, interpersonal, organizational, and communications skills.
